Arashiyama is one of the best places in Kyoto to see autumn leaves, but it is also one of the busiest. To enjoy it, arrive early, walk the bamboo grove and the river before the tour groups arrive, and leave the main bridge area for later. Plan the visit for October, November or December, and check the leaf forecast a few days before you go, because the timing changes each year.
Arashiyama sits at the west edge of the city. It is part of the wider Kyoto city guide. Read the Arashiyama area guide for the basic layout of the district, the river and the stations.

Check the leaves before you go
The autumn leaves do not change on the same day each year. The colour can come early in a cool autumn and late in a warm one. Many people plan a trip for a fixed week, and then find the leaves are not yet ready or have already fallen. Check a recent leaf forecast from a Japanese weather service or from the official tourism board for Kyoto a few days before your visit.
Plan with some room to move. If you have a few flexible days in Kyoto, you can choose the best day for the leaves and avoid the busiest weekend.
Check first: Check the leaf forecast on a Japanese weather service or the Kyoto tourism site a few days before you go, and check each temple's official site for its own open days and any special evening openings. Temples can change their hours in autumn.
Arrive early
Crowds in Arashiyama build up from late morning. The bamboo grove, the river path and the main bridge are at their busiest then, with tour groups and day visitors. Arrive early, before the shops open, and you can walk the grove with few people around you.
Walk from the station to the grove first. Then go to the temple garden you have chosen, and the river last. Work against the crowd: most people go in the other direction.
Choose one temple and one path
Arashiyama has many temples and gardens. Trying to see all of them in one visit leads to queues and fatigue. Choose one temple garden and one river path, and enjoy them well. Temples in this area often charge an entry fee, and some have short opening hours in autumn, so check the official site first.
For a quieter walk, look at the paths and smaller temples to the north of the main road. They are less visited, and the leaves can be just as good. Use a map to plan the route, and allow more time than you think you need.
Use the river and the bridge in the right order
The bridge over the river is one of the most photographed spots in the area. It is also one of the most crowded. Cross it early, or late in the afternoon when the tour groups have gone. From the river bank, you can see the hills, the leaves and the boats.
Do not stand in the middle of the bridge for a long time. Take your photo and move on, so others can pass.
Check first: Check the river and the boat rides on the official site or at the stop before you plan your day. Boat times and the river's conditions change with the season and the weather.
Eat and rest
Food in Arashiyama can be busy at lunch. Plan a late breakfast or an early lunch, and use Tabelog to find places with recent reviews near the station. The area has tofu and simple local dishes, so look for them on the menus. Book a table ahead when a place accepts bookings, and check the opening days first.

Many visitors finish the day with a rest at a cafe or a small park. This is also a good time to choose the next stop, or to take the train back to the centre.
Weather and clothing
Autumn in Kyoto can be warm in the afternoon and cold in the evening. Dress in layers, and carry a light jacket. Wear comfortable shoes, because the paths can be uneven and the walk to the grove takes longer than you expect.
Who this suits
This plan suits couples who want a calm day with views, shrines and gardens. It is less suited to groups who want busy nightlife, and it is not a good choice for a visit with very little time. Solo travellers can enjoy it too, but the quiet paths are best in pairs in the late afternoon, when the crowds have left.
For the city centre and the temples in the east, read the Kyoto city guide. Plan the day so you do not travel across the whole city in the busiest hours.
What to do next
Use the planner to choose your autumn dates and add Arashiyama to your route. Then check the city guide for the other places you want to see in Kyoto.
