A city with a peace park and museum, and a nearby island shrine in the sea.
Worth a day?
Maybe. This day joins a Shinkansen ride, a local train and a short ferry to the island of Miyajima and its shrine. It is a poor choice if you dislike long travel days, because each way takes about 100 minutes.
Pick your pace
Hiroshima and Miyajima works as a slow day or a full one. Choose the pace that fits yours and the stops that suit it come first. Nothing is removed.

- Take the Sanyo Shinkansen from Hakata Station to Hiroshima Station, about 60 minutes.
- At Hiroshima Station, take the JR Sanyo Line local train to Miyajimaguchi Station, about 25 minutes.
- Walk to the pier and take the ferry, about 10 minutes, to Miyajima.
A cheaper way
The Japan Rail Pass covers the Sakura and Hikari trains and the JR ferry, but it needs a supplement on Nozomi and Mizuho trains.
Coming back. Return by the same route in reverse. Check the JR West timetable for the last Shinkansen and the last ferry, because the sources did not list them.
Typical times. Check the timetable before you go.
Stay a night
Stay a night in Hiroshima or on Miyajima, because the round trip from Fukuoka takes most of a day.
