Himeji

Day trip from Kyoto

The best-kept castle in Japan, white and large, with a garden next door.

Worth a day?

Yes. Himeji Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a National Treasure, with a white keep and many steep stairs. Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours inside, and expect queues in busy seasons. It is a poor choice for travellers who cannot manage steep stairs or who want a full day in a city.

Pick your pace

Himeji works as a slow day or a full one. Choose the pace that fits yours and the stops that suit it come first. Nothing is removed.

Pick one and the stops reorder. Nothing is hidden. Clear

Street food, sweets and a proper meal between sights.

  2. At Himeji Station, leave by the North Exit.
  3. Walk about 15 to 20 minutes along Otemae-dori, or take a Shinki bus to the Otemon-mae stop and walk about 5 minutes.
A cheaper way

The JR Special Rapid is slower, at about 1.5 to 2 hours, and is a cheaper option than the Shinkansen.

Coming back. Trains run both ways through the day. Check the timetable for the last train from Himeji, because not every Shinkansen stops there.

Stay a night

Sleep in Kyoto and come by train, since the trip takes about 45 minutes each way and needs no seat booking.

Stay in HimejiHimeji has business hotels, guesthouses and hotels near the station or the castle. A night here lets you see the castle lit up in the evening, which a day trip from Osaka or Kyoto does not allow.Find stays in Himeji
