A small old capital with a great Buddha and friendly deer in the park.
Worth a day?
Yes. Nara is a calm day of old temples, a large deer park and the Great Buddha at Todaiji. It is a poor choice for people who want one quick stop or who have little interest in temples.
Pick your pace
Nara works as a slow day or a full one. Choose the pace that fits yours and the stops that suit it come first. Nothing is removed.

A cheaper way
JR Pass holders can take the JR Nara Line, which takes about 45 minutes; a Kintetsu Rail Pass does not cover limited express by itself.

Typical times. Check the timetable before you go.
Stay a night
Sleep in Kyoto and come by train, because the ride takes about 35 minutes and Kyoto has the main rail links.
