Koyasan

Day trip from Osaka

A mountain of temples with a huge old cemetery. Many visitors stay one night in a temple.

Worth a day?

Yes. Koyasan is a quiet day in a mountain temple town, reached by train, a cable car and a bus. It is a poor choice for people who dislike long, slow transport or want a busy city day, since each way takes about 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours.

Pick your pace

Koyasan works as a slow day or a full one. Choose the pace that fits yours and the stops that suit it come first. Nothing is removed.

Reservation needed
  1. Start at Nankai Namba or Shin-Imamiya station and board the Limited Express Koya for Gokurakubashi.
  2. At Gokurakubashi, take the Koyasan cable car up to Koyasan Station, about 5 minutes.
  3. Take a bus about 10 minutes to the town centre. Walking the mountain road to town is not allowed.
A cheaper way

Express and rapid trains cost less but take about 90 to 110 minutes and need a change at Hashimoto; the Koyasan World Heritage Ticket covers round trip travel between Namba and Koyasan and local buses, but not the Limited Express fee.

Coming back. The outward Koya ticket covers only the one-way trip, so book the return separately; check the Nankai timetable for return and last trains, which the sources do not list.

Typical times. Check the timetable before you go.

Stay a night

Sleep in Osaka and come by train, because the trip is about 1 hour 35 minutes to 2 hours each way and a day return is simple on the same line.
